| The first recorded evidence of a ferry service was in 1150 when it was provided by Benedictine monks, although Neolithic men who settled in the area were known to be proficient in the use of boats and undoubtably crossed the river. During the ferries heyday, there were as many as 11 terminals on the Wirral shore. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The Mersey Ferry is now used for commuters morning and night, but from 10am until 3 pm and at weekends there is a circular tour between the three terminals now in regular use. The tour takes 50 minutes and leaves from the Liverpool Pier Head travelling across to Seacombe in Wallasey and then upriver to Woodside in Birkenhead. The ferry then sets off upriver to a point opposite the site of the 1983 International Garden Festival at Otterspool, before returning to the Pier Head. |

| The river is a dangerous place with one of the fastest tidal currents in the world. The wind can catch one unawares as the ferry turns, so hang onto your hat! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
