The Ropewalks

HOME SITEMAP
The Ropewalks, a recent name, reviving memories of an old trade from the days of sail, for an area of long parallel streets running off Hanover Street, contains many old warehouses being renovated for residential and retail purposes, and numerous restaurants and bars.
Many of these establishments are strictly for the younger night-time crowd, and the area around concert square is packed at night, especially when the weather allows the customers to spill outside, where parasols, heaters and barbeques add to the atmostphere.
While sitting enjoying your meal, apart from people watching, it is possible to spot intricate pieces of plasterwork and carving if you look upwards. The buildings in this area vary from the warehouses visible in the large photo to beautifully rendered buildings, details of which are shown. It is remarkable to imagine that 100 years ago the labourers would be hard at work in and around the warehouses, while 50 metres away at the other side of the square from where the photo is taken,, the bosses would have been wheeling and dealing in the magnificent buildings that still stand today.
An example of the restaurants cum bars is
The Office.
There are numerous others in this vibrant neighbourhood which is well worth a visit.
